The city gets hot in the summer. One of the best ways to cool off, on a day of blaring heat in the U.S., is to get a large cup of iced coffee. But, iced coffee isn’t really a thing in Italy. For Italians, the custom is to drink a cappuccino in the morning and an espresso in the evening. Even when ordering a hot Americano I receive looks. Not only is our typical type of coffee not part of the Italian culture, but neither is ice; an essential part of the mix to make the delicious Caffe Freddo. Luckily, Florence does have a handful of places that specifically cater to the many tourists and study abroad students that join the city for months at a time. If you’ve been on a tiring search, here is a list of 8 places to go to satisfy your craving.

The beautiful region of Tuscany brings to mind vineyards, pretty small towns, the leaning tower of Pisa, and Florence. Most people think to leave their adrenaline activities for Interlaken, Chamonix and other places. Little do they know, there is the perfect spot in Tuscany for a day of fun! Canyon Park is located by Lucca and there is plenty to do from zip lining to paddle boarding to canyoning. Not interested in any of these activities? How about the views! Bright blue water, rock walls, bathing in the sun. Sounds like anyone’s cup of tea.
One of the hardest parts of preparing to study abroad is making sure you have everything you need. Packing can be quite the source of stress. Follow this guide for a successful semester in Florence!
There is plenty to learn from studying abroad but there are also wonderful business ideas and lifestyle choices we can take back with us to our home country at the end of our stay.
APERITIVO People always say experience is worth more than money but at some point money physically runs out. It can seem depressing when your friends are going to different countries every weekend during their semester abroaad but there are some upsides to something that seems like it has none. REALLY GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CITY 1. AS FRESH AS IT GETS The Central Market carries the freshest groceries in Florence. Whether it is homemade pasta, vegetables, fruits, breads or treats. I'm partial to the ravioli, spices and spreads. When I studied abroad I made a trip here at least twice a week. It is my happy place. I had to have that half kilo of pasta (try the lemon ravioli) that paired deliciously with the sun-dried tomato spread I discovered at the stand right across from it. Not to mention the man who sells the sun dried tomato deliciousness is a sweetheart! In Florence there is an array of wonderful restaurants, cafes and Gelaterias to choose from. What I found from living in Florence for three months was that there were the places I enjoyed and was happy I tried and then there were the places I loved and kept coming back to. Everything from location, price, taste and deals makes these places weekly or even daily stops for your Florentine experience. 1. NOBILE
A block away from my apartment and with a crowd constantly hovering around it, I can not believe I waited until my last 2 weeks to try this place. I was hooked immediately. I went four times in those 2 weeks. It was even my last meal in Florence! For just four euro you can get any one of their delicious sandwiches. I ordered the prosciutto and cheese panino with artichoke spread. It melts in my mouth. On top of the low price Nobile is easy to find. It is right next to the Medici Chapel. You can sit in the sun at one of the tables in Piazza di Madonna or less than walk 100 meters further and enjoy your sandwich on the steps of the San Lorenzo church. You choose! 2. THE GELATERIA DOWN THE STREET For me, this was Antica Gelateria Fiorentina. But for someone else it may be the small gelato shop near their place. You will find loads of blogs and trip advisor posts that swear on the best gelato places in Florence. Edoardo's, Gelateria dei Neri, La Carraia, are all great places to try but there is something special about the small family owned gelato shops hidden throughout the city that make them more than a one time stop. The same sweet man was working every time I came in and grew to know me pretty well. If you find your way here I suggest the lemon sorbet or a gelato milkshake! I get it with stracciatella. It is so light and creamy you'll be craving another before you reach the corner. 3. Don Nino |
