Single or in a relationship, Valentine’s Day is my second favorite holiday, behind Christmas. This will be my second Valentine’s Day spent in Italy and I had a blast two years ago. Whether you are looking to do something romantic, need to shop for a significant other, or a secret valentine, here are some of my suggestions! 1. Chocolate from Vestri While Conad and other small markets are selling heart shaped boxes of Baci, this store, located right by Lions Fountain, is decked out in all things heart shaped and Valentine’s Day themed! From little gifts to big boxes of chocolate, it is the perfect place to buy a wide range of sweets. 2. Splurge on a nice dinner I’d suggest La Giostra, Il Gatto dela Volpe or Acqua al Due. Two years ago, I ate at Zazas which was fantastic. Another big splurge would be the new Gucci restaurant! Many of these places do need reservations and because of Valentine’s Day, I’d make one sooner rather than later! 3. Visit Piazzale Michelangelo Easily the most romantic spot in the city. Even if you’re single, head up there and look out at the city. I don’t know about you...but Florence is my valentine! 4. Add your own love lock Love lock bridges are all over the world! The most famous being in Paris, you’ll find many padlocks also on the Ponte Vecchio. Legend has it that if a couple engraves their initials on a lock, attaches it to the bridge and throws away the key, their love will be eternal. 5. Take a day trip! Yes, this year Valentine’s Day is on a Wednesday. But, if you don’t have class or have an early class, I suggest a day trip to Verona, which is clearly the most romantic city in Italy! Experience the charm of the city with your loved one or even head there with friends. I had a blast on Valentine’s Day in Verona, two years ago with a girl friend. Plus, if you head to Juliet’s balcony, and rub her boob, legend has it, you’ll find luck in love! *If you want to experience Verona for the Verona in Love festival, head with Smart Trip this Sunday! 6. Give the flower guys a chance While usually they are an annoyance, it is the perfect day to say okay to that rose. Just this once! 7. Bake some treats My favorite Galentine’s Day was a of couple years ago when my roommate and I made heart shaped sugar cookies for our girl friends and decorated them with funny things like “I hate boys.” It was all a joke for the sake of “gating Valentine’s Day” but actually a lot of fun! Unfortunately, the baking section in Conad is limited. I’d suggest making cookies by scratch or heading to ViVi Market where they have a bunch of cake and cookie mixes (U.S. brands). The only downside is they are a bit pricey. 8. Decorate a little Tutto 99 and Tiger should both have decorations for the occasion to liven up your home. For Halloween, I threw down 10 euro at Tutto 99 and decked out my entire apartment with ghosts, pumpkins and more. Add some pink to your walls! 9. Enjoy a nice drink with a view! Bring a bottle of wine up to Piazzale with you, or splurge on a nice cocktail at any of the amazing rooftop locations in Florence. Hotel Cavour and Rinascente both have amazing views of the Duomo. The Westin Excelsior is a bit pricey but has a great aperitivo for 20 euro that includes the buffet, a drink and a great view right on the river. 10. Get a gift that is a little more personal
A leather bag or wallet, a painting from one of the many street artists, or some local jewelry! The jewelry on the Ponte Vecchio is fairly pricey, but you’d be surprised, it is cheaper than you may think. If you’re looking for something nice, you can find jewelry for as low as 45 euro. 11. Hit the town While many couples choose to have a nice night in with their loved ones, if you’re celebrating Galentine’s Day, really celebrate! It’s a holiday for the people you love, regardless of if they are your boyfriend or girlfriend. I’ll be enjoying myself at Space Club. Hope to see you there! Share what you plan to do this Valentine's Day!
